"That is Adatara Mountain;
That light is the Abukuma River"

With these two lines, poet and sculptor Takamura Kotaro, famous through the Meiji and Showa Eras, began his poem, "Two People Under the Trees" for his deceased wife Chieko.

This poetic monument expresses the continuing story of their love, and the city's famous poet, Kusano Shimpei, erected this for the people in Showa 35 (1960).

This stone is placed on a spot that had been used to sacrifice a cow when Nihonatsu Castle was built, and the spirit of the cow went to heaven and became the stone, so the stone in called "Ushi Ishi"(Cow Stone).
