The first lord of Nihonmatsu, Tamba Mitsushige, built Nihonmatsu Castle (Kasumiga Jo) at the same time they built the gate.
It is said that they decided on oak as material for the gate and looked hard and enthusiastically for the right tree, so it is called "Minowa Gate"
