In the middle of the garden at Nihonmatsu Castle (Kasumiga Jo), there is an old pine, which is part of the story regarding the name of the city.
"Kasa Matsu" comes from the opened umbrella (kasa) shape of the tree, which looks like its name.
"Yachiyo Pine" is another name for it, and we believe it is 300 years old.
A long time ago, there were Two Reimatsu trees (Tsuru-matsu and Kame-matsu), so this was called Nihonmatsu (two-pine) mountain, and it became a familiar landmark for travelers.
After that, some say, the name of the place became Nihonmatsu.
